Veganism is best understood in a dietary context, as foods that are plant-based and free of animal or animal-derived ingredients. But it isn’t just what you eat that is vegan. The beauty industry, in recent times, is strewn with brands that have turned to vegan alternatives. What was super-niche once is now quite the buzz in town.
Why Vegan Beauty?
Because plant actives have many benefits to offer to skin and hair, and many of them can be just as effective as animal or animal-derived ones. Also, there are concerns about how the latter is obtained – not all ingredients from the furry friends are sourced ethically.
Vegan Vs. Cruelty-Free
Beginners often believe that cruelty-free products automatically qualify as vegan, since no harm is done to our non-human cohabitants, right? Not really! Cruelty-free products are those that have not been tested on animals whereas vegan products are free of ingredients – honey, beeswax, lanolin etc. – that are obtained from animals or their byproducts. The former may still contain non-plant-based constituents while the latter may be tested on animals for efficacy and safety. If you want your beauty product to be a mix of both, be sure to check the labels!
